WebNIR
WebNIR (Web Tools for the Assessment of Occupational Exposure to Non-Ionizing Radiation) is a web platform designed and developed by the "Nello Carrara" Institute of Applied Physics of the National Research Council as part of a series of projects funded by INAIL (formerly BRIC-2016, 2019, and 2022 calls) focusing on the following topics:
- Web tools to assist in assessing the risk of exposure to electromagnetic fields - including those wearing active implantable medical devices - and artificial optical radiation.
- Development of tools and methods for assessing and managing the risk deriving from exposure to electromagnetic fields for the protection of workers wearing wearable and implantable medical devices.
- Assessment and management of risk arising from exposure to new sources of electromagnetic fields for the protection of workers with active implantable medical devices
Operational web tools for assessing and managing risk from exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) are provided, and three thematic areas address specific risk and information domains:
- EMF (Electromagnetic Fields): includes consultation of regulatory limits, technical documentation, calculation tools, and processing of measurements obtained with the most common instruments in this sector.
- DMIA (Active Implantable Medical Devices): is dedicated to risk assessment for wearers of implantable/wearable devices.
- ROA (Artificial Optical Radiation): includes methodologies and web tools dedicated to electromagnetic radiation in the wavelength range between 100 nm and 1 mm.
Over the years, in addition to CNR-IFAC and INAIL, various Italian institutions have been involved in the different projects:
- USL Toscana Sud-Est (Siena)
- Policlinico San Matteo (Pavia)
- Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Rome)
- ARPA Lazio
- Institute of Clinical Physiology (CNR-IFC, Pisa)
- University of Modena and Reggio Emilia
The portal, open to the public but developed specifically for use by occupational health and safety professionals, provides:
- Technical documentation (in web or PDF format) on various regulatory and methodological aspects, and operating procedures
- Integrated calculation tools, such as interpolations, analysis of measurement data files, calculation of safety distances
- Access to documentation (scientific publications and presentations) produced during the various projects.
WebNIR is intended for a technical and professional audience, specifically:
- Corporate prevention services, occupational safety technicians, and operators who manage risks from new physical agents such as electromagnetic fields and optical radiation.
- Professionals who work with wearers of implantable or wearable medical devices in the workplace.
- Researchers, trainers, and consultants in the field of radiation protection and environmental or occupational safety.
- Companies and public administrations that require updated methodological tools to comply with regulations and manage risk scenarios.
